Week 18

+ Week 18 has been pretty uneventful!
+ My stomach continues to get bigger. I had to go purchase a few more maternity shirts.
+ I have been working on a the dresser for the nursery since Saturday. I spent 5 hours sanding it down to raw wood and could barely move by the end of the night.
+ I REALLY wanted a Petunia Pickle Bottom diaper bag but didn't like the $179 price tag. Thanks to some Baby Center moms', I discovered BabySteals and got this bag for 50% off.
I originally wanted the black ( Evening in Innisbrook) boxy backpack but really like this red one, especially considering the price tag.

Mini Guest Bath Makeover

I did a few quick updates to the guest bathroom the weekend before last. I took several pictures while doing so and realized that I have never shared pictures of the room. So without further ado...

This is the bathroom on move-in day.

Side note: it is REALLY difficult to take good pictures of the bathroom due to the small space and layout.

We installed the over the toilet cabinet when we moved in for extra storage

My dad helped with installing wainscoting

One of my favorite things in this bathroom is that they used granite slabs for the tub ledge and window sill, as seen below.
I believe they used remnants from my counter installation.
My other favorite thing is the ORB faucet and how much better it looks compared to its chrome counterpart.

So onto the updates. Both the bathrooms and the kitchen in our house have Tray ceilings. With the white Wainscoting it was just too bland for my taste and I started thinking about painting the drop down portion a different color.

I bought a small test pot of gray paint at Lowe's in Coastal Jetty and thought I would try things out. If I hated it, all I needed was some white paint to make it go away!

See that ugly light? That's the second part of this update. I saw this light at Lowe's:

At first I wasn't sure how I felt about the off white shade but I really loved the shape and thought something like this would like great in the tray ceiling. It was about $58 so we decided we would give it a go. Here is what the ceiling looks like now:

It actually did require two coats of paint.

And with the light on.

The whole mini update took about an hour and around $62 ( light and test pot of paint). The room feels so much more complete.... with the shower curtain closed that is! I have two more things I want to tackle in this room before it is officially DONE!

I would really like to replace this recessed can in the shower with an ORB light. Maybe spray paint? Although I don't think recessed cans are too expensive to replace.

While I did get around to replacing the faucet... I never addressed the shower fixture behind the curtain. I would really like to get something detachable since this is the only tub in the house and therefore will be used with the baby.

But for now, I will just keep the curtain closed :)

Week 17: It's a...

+ My belly continues to grow! I am almost exclusively wearing maternity pants.

+ This Saturday, Tim and I decided to go get an elective ultrasound to find out Baby H's gender. It ended up being quite the ordeal! We had a 3pm appointment which we were a little late for because we had trouble finding the suite. The tech was very nice and spent a lot of time with us, however baby would not cooperate: legs crossed the whole time. She asked us to come back at 5pm and gave me instructions to drink, drink, drink until I came back. We arrived back at 5pm and I ended up having to wait till 5:30 because she was running behind. By this time, I REALLY had to go to the bathroom. Again, baby was not in position. She asked me what I drank and when I said water, she told me to go ahead and run to the bathroom and then come back. She handed me a mini can of coke to drink. Immediately, baby started moving and we got our "potty shots".

+ While Tim and I found out the gender Saturday, we did not tell anyone till Sunday. We had our family over and ordered a gender reveal cake. It turned out so much better than I was expecting.
We let both of our moms cut the cake from opposite sides. Lots of screaming and jumping ensued! Because it's a...GIRL!
+ It almost feels unreal! While I had no "gut instinct" either way, I was ready to hear boy so was pleasantly surprised. I am going to be completely honest here and say that I am hesitant to get to excited because what if it changes at my anatomy scan? I know the likelihood of that happening is rare but I also know it is a common fear among girl moms. I have also googled images of other girl ultrasounds "just to be sure". It has been confirmed by three techs so you think that would calm my fears a little but... I guess I am just a worrier! :)

Week 16

+ Tim wasn't home so this week's picture is a "selfie". I am 16 weeks 6 days in the above picture.

+ I feel like I have officially "popped". I am starting to get comments on my bump at work from people who did not know that I was pregnant.

+ I am feeling REALLY good! I have no complaints. I have continued to work out 4 or so times per week which I am very grateful for.

+ I have definitely noticed an increase in hunger this week. I am attributing this to the fact that the baby doubles in size between 16-20 weeks. Tim also notes an increase in hunger... not sure what his excuse is! :)

+ I had my 16 week check-up on Monday. It was pretty uneventful.. reviewing labs and drawing some additional blood for the 2nd part of my sequential screening. Everything continues to look good and baby's heartbeat is strong. My next appointment is on May 13th for an anatomy scan.

+ up 4 lbs to date.

Garage Updates: Paint and Epoxy

The next step in our garage makeover was to paint the walls. I am fairly certain they have never been painted... well at least not since the house was built. We picked up one gallon of Valspar's " Antique" (which is used in out house as well) and painted the walls of our garage one afternoon.

Its amazing how big of a difference a coat of paint can make!

Now... the floors. They were ROUGH!

It' is a little hard to tell from the pictures above but our garage has two different slabs of concrete. According to our neighbors, the original owners ( before the dealers) owned some type of food truck. Well the home owners association would not allow him to park the food truck in the driveway and I guess the truck was too tall to make it under the garage door? Anyway, he cut the original slab to make a "drop down". Of course, when he sold the house it was required to fill it in leaving us with this.

After painting the garage, we really wanted to tackle an epoxy coating for the floor. Tim was super nervous about how the epoxy would adhere to the new concrete since it chipped pretty easily. After doing a TON of research online, we decided to go for it!

Here is how we did it:

1)      Remove everything from the garage.
2)      Spot treat any oil stains. We purchased a specific degreaser to use on the stains first.
3)      Etching- We purchased a specific spray bottle for this. Just a generic bug sprayer with a pump. It made the process much easier since you can control where you are spraying. It is best to do a small area at a time. Once you spray, use the bush room to scrub the surface to bring out any surface stains.
After spraying the entire floor, you must RINSE, RINSE, RINSE. We used a large push broom to get the water out of the garage. We repeated this rinsing step several times as you should not have any trace of the acid when you start the epoxy.  If you garage floor now feels like fine grit sandpaper, you are ready to move on to the next step. We however, still had some stains showing through. We decided “better safe than sorry” and chose to repeat the etching process a second time before moving on to the epoxy.

4)       Allow the floor to dry completely, at least 4 hours.

5)      Next you are ready for your first coat of epoxy. Mix the can of hardener with the can of paint that came in the kit and allow to sit for 30 minutes, not in direct heat. We purchased this kit.
6)      Coat your floor. I trimmed around the edges while Tim rolled the rest of the garage.

7)      Allow the paint to dry overnight. Don’t walk on it or drive in it.
8)      The next day, you are ready to apply your second coat. If you want a flat finish, you would add your nonskid additive into this step. We wanted a glossy finish which required additional steps and therefore we did not have to add the additive at this point. Again, after cutting in, Tim rolled the floors. I followed behind him adding the decorative chips that came in our kit.
9)      Allow the floor to dry. If you want a flat finish… you would be done.
10)   We wanted a high gloss finish. So we used Rustoleum’s High Gloss clear coat kit a few days later. It is a very similar process. You mix the hardener with the clear paint. Wait 30 minutes . Right before using we added our non skid additive. Again, I cut in while Tim rolled. I will say that this step was harder because you can’t always tell if you have completely covered an area because it is clear.
11)   Let dry 24 hours before walking on, 72- before you park on it. Tim made me wait a week before allowing my car back in the garage “just to be safe”!

Here is what things look like now:

The transition is still there but much less noticeable

The floor turned out SO much better than we were expecting. It was a long process to complete but not nearly as difficult as we made it out to be! It is very easy to maintain and we LOVE the look of it.
Because I could not resist....it is not unusual to find my husband doing this:
I married a neat freak!

A few words of advice. Epoxy is messy!! Buy cheap rollers, cheap brushes, and disposable liners. We threw everything away rather then deal with the clean up. We even threw out the 5 gallon mixing bucket. They say the project can be done in a day to two days.... it took us 4! It does help to have fans going around the clock. Epoxy also lets off a ton of fumes so the fans serve two purposes: helps dry and vent the smell.... And no, I did not complete this project while pregnant! ;)

Week 15

+ I am not crazy about the above picture. I feel like I am in this awkward "in-between" stage. I need maternity pants but not maternity shirts. Yet a lot of my shirts don't look right. Even though I am only up 2 pounds thus far, I definitely feel like my body is shifting and my belly is fuller. I think I am still looking more plump that pregnant!

+ I am still loving the return of my energy!

+ Speaking of the above, this weekend we painted the back bedroom. It still has a long way to go. Here is a little preview:

+ In addition to painting, I also picked up this second hand Craigslist dresser which I hope to re-do for the baby and also utilize as a changing table. I will blog about our progress!

+ I will be 16 weeks tomorrow and the idea of an elective gender ultrasound is constantly on my mind! I hate that my doctor wants me to wait close to 5 more weeks to find out the gender. Next appointment is on Monday and I am going to talk to her about it again... I have a feeling it is just office policy though!

Garage Upgrades: Installing Hand-me-down Cabinets

This post is LONG overdue. We started working on the garage upgrades around June of last year. Our garage was a disaster when we moved. So bad that we didn't even think to take pictures of it. It had the original garage door opener, an old ratty fan and a slop sink I wouldn't use for anything, ALL of which had to be replaced. We did this fairly quickly after moving in but the garage still left a lot to be desired.

When my parent's decided to take the plunge and redo their kitchen, I was quick to ask for their 1980's style cabinets for added storage in the garage. We had been pricing used cabinets on Craigslist and at the local Restore but the prices were always high and they never had exactly what we were looking for. My parent's have a fairly large kitchen which left us plenty of choices as far as cabinets go. Luckily, my dad use to own his own cabinet business so was able to help us with the actual install.

Along the right side of our garage, we installed 5 base cabinets( two doubles with a single in between) and six smaller upper cabinets so they were approximately the same length.

Since we had so many cabinets remaining, we decided to install some above the washer and dryer for added storage as well.
Pardon the walls, we get to them in another phase of our garage updates!

Since my parent's were able to reuse most of their granite counters in their new kitchen, the only real cost we had for this project was to purchase a new counter for our free base cabinets.

We went with a stock laminate counter from Lowe's. Since our new cabinets runs a span of 8.5 feet, we had to buy the 10 foot counter. It is actually this one . We also picked up some matching edging for the ends so I think we spent a total of $150.

After my dad's cabinet install, Tim got the idea to remove some random unused pegboard behind our water heater and reuse it. We trimmed out the area with wood (again salvaged from behind the old pegboard) and cut it to size.
We  then cut the pegboard down to size and it attached it as two separate panels.

Tim quickly got into "organizing mode" and had the new work station looking this in no time!

Yes, we have a TV in our garage. And sadly, it gets used just about every weekend while we are doing yard work or various other DIY projects. What can I say? We love TV.
My dad got Tim a bunch of new organizers for Christmas so this is what the work bench looks like today.

Next up... how we tackled the floors!

Patio Furniture

After wrapping up the front patio floor, we we eager to get furniture for the area. I shopped around several local stores and ultimately ignored the "Don't do it" commercials from Leader's and purchased my patio furniture at the home improvement store.

Since the color of our house is green, we wither wanted to stick with green or go with something neutral. It seems like red is all the hype in outdoor furniture lately so it took a while to find something I liked. I was watching a set at Lowe's but apparently I wasn't watching close enough because it got clearanced out and I missed my chance.

So then I came across this set at Home Depot. It is Martha Stewart Living Charlottetown Collection and came in a green color. The best part was that it had a "new lower price" when I bought it. Thanks to a 10% off coupon, some Christmas Gift cards and 6 months of no interest, we are the proud new owners of patio furniture!

Side note: Looks like the price went back up! I got the sofa, one rocker, one standard chair and two end tables on sale for $513 plus tax. Similar sets at Lowes were right around $1000 and that was MUCH cheaper than Leader's.

Oh.. and we made one other purchase. A propane fire pit which doubles as our table. It was a total splurge item but we LOVE it. They actually don't have the exact model I purchased on the Lowe's website but it looks very much like this, only shorter and wider. It is by Allen and Roth and was $399. We had budgeted spending around $1000 on furniture so the fire pit was a nice added bonus thanks to  the sale we scored on the furniture.

I thought the furniture would take up most of the front patio but as you can see in the picture below, we still have a TON space!
The fire pit comes with the plastic "weatherproof" covering. We plan on making something a bit more secure in the upcoming months. We have had a couple of windy days and the existing cover has blown right off.

I originally planned on putting an area rug out there but now I am not certain. The area is under a tree and I feel like it will be a lot of upkeep. Even though we sprayed all the cushions with Outdoor Scotchgard, we don't keep them out unless we are using them. So right now they are stored in our garage cause I have yet to purchase an outdoor storage box.

Such a huge improvement from two months ago, right?
